Douglas Young, Young at Art, Fernleigh
Young at Art has been making the trophies for the Bangalow Billycart Derby since it first started over 20 years ago.
The feedback over the years I have received has been outstanding. Participants love having a handmade trophy that is unique. Most have told me it sits in a special place in their homes.
I just received a simple email, from the organisers, stating that my trophies were no longer needed for this year’s race. I imagine they will be replaced with the cheap plastic ones that are coated with gold paint.
In the years I have made the trophies I have never raised the price as I felt it was a gift to the Bangalow community. Once again, it is a sad day when a local artist is replaced by junk which is probably made in China. In this economic climate, and overseas imports, artists are struggling throughout the country.
The Echo has supported me through the years by having me make several different awards, including the ‘Jasons’ for their 20th anniversary celebration. I feel saddened and hurt by this decision, and at least deserved a phone call to thank me for the years of hard work.

PS: Here is a photo of one of my trophies.

For four decades The Echo has printed the stories some people loved, some people hated, and some pretended not to read. If you want us to keep telling the truth, the real truth, not the sugar-coated version. We’ll need your support to keep the presses rolling.
