Lantern-decorating and compost might seem a strange mix at first but they will both feature at the third Lismore Recycled Market this Saturday, 21 May.
Market organisers aim to deliver a new theme or attraction each month, alongside a unique collection of upcycled goods sold by local people in purpose-built shipping containers.
This month, the Lismore City Council will mark International Compost Awareness Week by giving away two trailer loads of compost made from food and garden waste.
‘All you have to do is purchase something from the market and you’ll be in the running to win,’ Waste Education Officer Danielle Hanigan said.
‘We will also have a potting stall for kids where they can use our compost to pot up a plant and take it home for the garden.
‘We want to encourage people to use the green organics service and buy their compost from Council.
‘Not only is it 100 per cent certified organic but it is made from the waste we create in our own backyards and kitchens. It’s a completely closed-loop system.’
The third Lismore Recycled Market will also include lantern-decorating.
Parents can purchase a lantern at half-price for just $6 and volunteers will be on hand to help kids decorate the lantern, ready to join the annual parade on 25 June.
‘Parents can enjoy a day of shopping and looking around, and you can take home a lantern in plenty of time to join the parade next month,’ Danielle said.
The Lismore Recycled Market runs from 9am to 1pm at the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre on Wyrallah Road. It includes food, coffee and music, plus the Lismore Revolve Shop will be open for second-hand bargains.
