Cape Byron Steiner School is known for many wonderful things. Sport is not one of them. Neither is the colour black. But the Year 8 boys netball team just made history by heading to Olympic Park and winning the NSW Schools Cup.
They beat boys from Albury, Narooma and across the suburbs of Sydney.
The boys call themselves the Black Oystas. No-one quite knows why, but now everyone in the world of netball knows their name.
In the final, Cape Byron played the unbeaten Narrara, who had two kids over six feet tall (in old money)!
At half time, the Black Oystas were down by three goals. But sensational defence, swift passing moves and nerveless goal shooting put Cape Byron on top, and got them an 18–13 win.
‘The Black Oystas looked sleek, professional and showed great skill on the courts going five games undefeated,’ proud mum Jane Dolahenty said.
‘While their skills were impressive, what stood out the most was their teamwork and camaraderie – they were respectful to their opponents, courteous to their umpires and showed wonderful team spirit’.
The win was a truly outstanding achievement and a great credit to the school and especially team manager Steve ‘Ric’ Richards.
Boy’s netball will never be the same.
