The Byron Beez basketball team had a convincing 80–52 win over the Ballina Breakers to earn a crack at the Sunshine Conference title this weekend.
The first quarter promised a tight and exciting encounter when the Beez went to the break just one point ahead at 18–17, according to Jenny Ogle from the Byron Basketball Association.
But then the Beez hit a rhythm courtesy of big man Jason Golding and Sam Bakker, who hit a few three-pointers in a row. Backed up by Nash Campbell and Flavio Cardelli holding the centre, the Beez extended their lead to 33–23 at half time.
The third quarter saw Michael Baggaley draw shooting fouls from the Breakers for several three-point plays giving the Beez a five-point buffer, with the last quarter to play.
It saw the Beez step up another notch with the speed and intercepts from Raj Chandra and Sal Daly proving too big a challenge for the Breakers.
The win puts the Byron Beez into the grand final for the Sunshine Conference against the Grafton Vikings in Grafton this Saturday.
