Some spending cannot be questioned

The euphemisms were flying when Australia's Defence Minister Richard Marles announced last week that an extra $50 billion would be spent on our military over the next decade, and that $72.8 billion of already announced spending would be redirected.

Mullumbimby High School’s Krista Ruehe has started a crowdfunding campaign to help her get to the United States to compete in the Australian U/19 futsal team.

In September Krista was named Most Valuable Player at the National futsal tournament in Brisbane, on her way to being selected for the Australia Team.

The national squad will   tour the United States in July next year.

‘To achieve this from a regional area is an amazing effort and I have given her every assistance with preparation that I can, and she has given every effort to some serious training regimes,’ according to the school’s soccer coach Brian Hedge.

Being part of the squad is all self-funded and costs $6,600. Krista is hoping to crowdfund $4,000.

‘Coming from a single-parent family the  sum means we need some help to get this very deserving girl the reward she has earned. Any help would be massively appreciated,’ Brian said.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Congrats Krista on the big achievement!
Echo can you get your facts straight though. “Futsalroo” is different to being a selected Australian representative for a money making futsal organisation that provides overseas trips for talented players.
It’s great to recognise local achievement but you are helping promote an organisation that is tarnishing the sport many of us love and is confusing these children with fake representative teams and taking every cent from their pockets.
Just do a little background check next time.
    Congrats Krista!

Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.
