We live in one of the most beautiful, environmentally unique regions on the planet, and this Sunday is your chance to roll up your sleeves and keep it that way.

Clean Up Australia Day is in its 26th year, and over that time volunteers have devoted more than 31 million hours toward cleaning up the environment.

Founded in 1989 by avid yachtsman Ian Kiernan, who was shocked at the state of the planet’s oceans when he sailed round the world in 1987, what began as Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day, has morphed into an annual global event.

Since 40,000 volunteers hauled tonnes of rubbish away in 1989, Clean Up The World was launched in 1993, and now an estimated 40 million people from 130 counties annually take part.

Since it’s inception, volunteers have collected more than 331,000 tonnes of rubbish on Clean Up Australia Day, including many millions of plastic bags.

Recenty, Lismore adopted one of the visions of Clean Up Australia Day, with a vision to go plastic bag free by launching Boomerang Bags Lismore.

Founded on the Gold Coast, the concept works to reduce the use of plastic bags by engaging local communities in the making of Boomerang Bags.

Made using recycled materials, Boomerang Bags provide a free, fun, sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

Volunteer positions at Clean Up Australia Day sites across the region are filling up fast, so go to www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au to register.

For more information on going plastic bag free, join the Boomerang Bags Lismore Facebook page.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
