An attempt by conservative Tweed Shire councillors to reverse the council’s support for marriage equality has failed.
A rescission motion on a resolution to support a ‘Yes’ vote was lost 4-2, with councillors Katie Milne, Reece Byrnes, Chris Cherry and Ron Cooper against and councillors Warren Polglase and James Owen in support of the rescission motion.
Councillor Pryce Allsop was unable to attend due to a prior commitment.
As a result, the resolution from the 21 September meeting now stands.
The resolution is that the council confirms support to amend the Marriage Act to include all members of the LGBTQIA community.
Also, the council will erect a rainbow flag or banner outside the Tweed and Murwillumbah chambers for the duration of the postal survey, and that the council holds at least one public function to support the Yes vote.
Details of the function will be released as soon as arrangements are made, a council spokesperson said.
Tweed mayor Katie Milne, who moved the original motion last week, had described the rescission motion as a delaying tactic.
She also rejected the conservatives argument that the council shouldn’t be advocating on such an issue.
‘I thought it was important that the council take a stance as an organisation, just as other organisations such as Qantas, has taken a stance in support of the marriage equality campaign,’ she said.
