No Intermission for Mike McClellan

MIKE-McCLELLAN

Yet again Mike McClellan has delivered an album of wonderful new songs. This is his third album in six years.  No Intermission  was again produced by Matt Fell and continues the remarkable consistency of Mike’s late career revival. It’s 40 years since Song and Danceman was a national hit and voted Song of The Year by the music industry at its annual awards. His songs have earned him an honoured place within the history of Australian music. It has surprised nobody who knew his early work that his three albums of new songs since returning to his music full time should be so good. He remarked in a recent interview, ‘When I made the decision to return to performing and writing again I didn’t want to come back and just play the old stuff, as good as it might be. And I didn’t want to release any new material unless I felt it was at least the equal of, and preferably better than, the songs I had recorded all those years ago. I’m first and foremost a writer. I still love the challenge and still get excited when I think I might have written something I can be proud of and happy to perform. I think  No Intermission  lives up to the standards I set myself – and I’m my harshest critic. I hope others believe so too.’

Saturday 21 October at the Byron Theatre, 7.30pm.

Main Arm Magic

Families will be kicking up their heels in celebration when Thrillbilly Stomp headlines Main Arm Public School’s annual Music in the Valley event on Friday 20 October. The thigh-slapping infectious sound of Thrillbilly Stomp is influenced by music in which accordion and mandolin are prominent such as Celtic, Cajun, zydeco and bluegrass. Using these styles to inform and inspire, the band creates a sound that is unique, fun and uplifting. The event kicks off at 4pm with a Teddy Bears Singalong. The much-loved Curly Cousins will delight and inspire both young and old with their rich harmonies, uplifting arrangements, multi-instrumental talents and audience interaction.

Another highlight will be Main Arm students showcasing their musical talent from the junior and senior choirs to flautists, violinists and guitarists.
With free entry there will also be fun activities, sideshow alley, pony rides, an inflatable obstacle course, a petting zoo and delicious food as well as a bar (licence pending) on offer.

This is the school’s biggest fundraiser, with money being used to fund sporting and arts programs for all students. The school is also fundraising for the Rural Fire Brigade at the event.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.
