A man has been charged with numerous offences after stealing a motor vehicle with a baby onboard in South Lismore yesterday.
About 9am (Thursday, 5 December, 2019) a man parked his Holden Commodore sedan out the front of a shop on Union Street, South Lismore. An 11-month-old girl remained strapped in a baby seat inside the car with the air-conditioning on and car running.
A man exited the same shop, after allegedly stealing a drink, before getting in the Holden Commodore and leaving the location with the baby still inside.
The owner of the Commodore and a witness then followed the vehicle in another car towards the Bruxner Highway intersection, before parking in front of the stolen vehicle at the traffic lights.
The owner of the stolen Commodore, the witness and a NSW Police Force sergeant, who was driving past and observed the incident unfold, attempted to gain entry into the vehicle.
In an effort to escape, the man reversed the Commodore and collided with a stationary car.
At this time, the officer attached to Richmond Police District, gained access to the vehicle and placed the 25-year-old man under arrest.
He was taken to Lismore police station where he was charged with take motor vehicle with occupant on board, steal motor vehicle, use offensive instrument to prevent apprehension, drive while disqualified and shoplifting.
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Lismore Local Court tomorrow Friday (6 December, 2019).
The baby was distressed but unharmed.
