The CUBE Gallery is one of the smaller art galleries in the world and it is launching the first series of exhibitions since the COVID 19 outbreak with a special feature on art made in and responding to the lockdown.
CUBR curator Hannah Massey says that for many, this withdrawal from day to day work responsibilities has allowed for more time to create. ‘For others the creative arts has been an outlet or a support through the stressors of the times.’
The first exhibit features a ceramic sculpture by multi-media visual artist Jacquelina Wills titled From Greed to Gifting. Ms Massey says that Jacquelina draws together both traditional and personal mythologies in this piece that tells of the potential for this time to be a ‘hero’s journey’ moving towards a more collaborative and caring society.
‘The greedy man is a character from Jacquelina’s daughter’s dream, who becomes enmeshed in a net that she describes as “woven by all generations whose weave includes compassion, integrity and natural law”.’
The CUBE Gallery is situated in the Council chambers foyer and can be viewed easily from the footpath. The Covid Craft series will be rotated fortnightly so if you, your children or your family have been working on creative endeavours during this time please submit photos to curator at [email protected] to have your pieces showcased.
