John Jennings, Numinbah

One racist spark in America and the whole world is afire with people tearing down racist icons. That’s a good start.

Yet racism is only one of many sicknesses in the human mind. Freedom from all of them is the only way to peace and prosperity.

When shall we start tearing down icons in Christian churches of a man being slowly tortured to death on a cross? Thousands died that way. Jesus was no exception. Religious idolatry is just as bad as racism.

Maybe the churches should go too. Or be put to better use to house the homeless. We don’t need special places of worship. The whole thing is divine.

The idea of worshiping something or someone allegedly outside of you is a trap set by religious bigots. The bait is an offer of eternal salvation, if you behave yourself, backed up with a threat of eternal damnation if you don’t. And millions fall for it all the time.

Can we evolve beyond the intelligence of a donkey with a carrot at one end and a stick at the other? If not, extinction will surely follow.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Oh John our species is still really one of primitive hunter gatherers. Our level of civil advancement is skin deep and we revert to our true nature whenever the opportunity presents. Look at all the ratbag beliefs circulating around Byron Shire (and the planet) and the backdrop of violent and predatory behaviour we adopt on a routine basis. The God botherers are just a rational manifestation of our true nature and should be viewed along with all the other myths that sustain our society.
