Ocea Curtis and Mia Baker from Byron High were the winning surfing team in the Junior Girls Ocean and Earth High School State Titles, held at Corrimal Beach at Wollongong on Dharawal Country. 

The High School State Titles saw 45 teams from 25 schools in NSW compete in a surfing teams event where two surfers worked together to score the highest combined heat totals.

The competition wrapped up yesterday (19 July) with four new schools returning home champions in the Senior and Junior Girls and Boys divisions.

‘The Junior Girls winners came all the way from Byron Bay. Ocea Curtis and Mia Baker made one phenomenal team,’ said a spokesperson for the competition.

The pair were on-point from the get-go, both scoring 7.5’s in the semifinals from just three waves and continued their success in the finals finishing with a 12.6 heat total, almost double the runner-up team Cronulla High.

Ocea said it was a rewarding way to finish the week down south, after competing in the Junior Titles last week.

‘The surf was a bit difficult but still really fun. It was so much fun surfing with Mia and really cool represent my school!’ said Ocea.

The Junior Boys division was conquered by Central Coast’s Tuggerah Lakes Secondary School, Tumbi Umbi Campus that was represented by Chex Dempsey and Taj Daley. 

The Senior Girls, the Kiama High team of NSW Junior High Performance team surfers Lucy Darragh and Holly Wishart were untouchable winning both their semifinal and scoring the top wave in the Seniors division in the final that was awarded a 7.25 and a heat total 12.75.

The Senior Boys was won by duo Lachlan Smith and Brin Valaire from Newcastle Grammar.

Participating schools were: Warilla High, Tumbi Umbi Campus, The Scots College, The Illawarra Grammar School, St Peters Anglican College, St Luke’s Grammar School Dee Why, Pymble Ladies College, OLSH Kensington, Northern Beaches Secondary College – Freshwater Campus, Newcastle Grammar School, Narrabeen Sports High School, Matraville Sports High School, Marcellin Randwick, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, Kiama High School, Illawarra Sports High, Evans River School, Cronulla High, Central Coast Sports College, Carroll college, Byron Bay High School, Bulli High School, Brigidine College Randwick, Barrenjoey high school, Balgowlah Boys.
