When you don’t have a home or are vulnerable simple things like accessing a shower or getting your laundry done can become significant challenges.

For teachers at Casino’s St Mary’s Primary School these challenges were highlighted during a trip to a homeless centre Brisbane.

‘Staff came back from that and worked out that there is a growing need in Casino for free laundry and shower services,’ Sam Irvine, Assistant Principal Mission at St Mary’s Primary School told The Echo

‘With homelessness and financial hardship on the rise in Casino, many individuals and families are struggling to access basic hygiene services. There is only one free shower in Casino and no free place to get your laundry done.’

Mobile laundry service

Responding to this need the school has come up with a proposal for a mobile laundry service.

‘This project is about more than just clean clothes – it’s about dignity, health, and inclusion,’ said Sam.

‘Many people in our community are doing it tough, sleeping rough, or living in their cars. Without access to clean clothing, they face additional health risks, social stigma, and barriers to employment and housing. This mobile laundry will provide a vital service where it’s needed most.

The St Mary’s Mobile Laundry Project will be managed by the school and provide the service for free for community use. Our staff and students will help support it as volunteers. We will work out where our students can help out with particular jobs, folding and bagging laundry to making hygiene packs etc. We anticipate having coffee and snacks for people waiting.’

$30,000 needed

The project is designed to have two washing machines and two dryers on a trailer to provide free laundry services to those in need from a range of locations,’ said Sam.

‘We need your help! The project is seeking financial donations, sponsorships, and community support to fund the build and launch of the mobile laundry. Donations of any size will directly contribute to improving lives in Casino. Our school has already applied for multiple grants and will be fundraising as a school community throughout the year.’

If you are interested in getting involved as a sponsor, volunteer or with a great idea then contact Sam at: [email protected].
