Artist in Focus
Tracing Threads from Mullum to Melbourne by Katie Alleva
It’s not every day a Mullumbimby printmaker gets the opportunity to exhibit at the leading body for printmaking in Australia. The Print Council of Australia is the peak body representing and connecting our national communities in printmaking and works on paper.
Alleva’s show, ‘Tracing Threads’, was exhibited in the Northern Rivers Community Gallery in March/April this year. It is the creative outcome of her recently completed degree at Griffith University, for which she achieved First Class Honours. The exhibition explores the re-writing of the personal migration story of her Italian Alleva family. Katie says, ‘By exploring my family history with a focus on oral stories, old photographs, cartography, and archival objects, I confront ancestral intergenerational trauma, and explore my own position within this entangled web and migration narrative’.
Exhibiting at the PCA is an exciting opportunity to connect with a broader audience, especially Melbourne’s large Italian migrant community. This project was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia. Opening night is on 5 October at the Print Council of Australia Gallery Melbourne.
Katie runs Botanical Blueprint workshops in Mullumbimby and Burleigh Heads.

Applications for BSA long courses now open
BSA year-long courses offer support for emerging and established artists as well as an encouraging platform for those seeking introduction to the field. Their courses incorporate studio programs designed to help students acquire the knowledge, skills and experience needed to form an integrated understanding of contemporary ideas and art practices.

Where they walked: Lismore Regional Gallery pop-up space
30 September – 28 October 2023
‘Where they walked’ is an exhibition of four First Nations artists: Kylie Caldwell (Bundjalung), Luke Close (Githabul), Nickolla Clark (Arakwal) and Jenn Rowe (Trawlwulwuy). Much Indigenous history has been tragically erased by colonisation. In this exhibition, the artists summon the voices of their ancestors, reclaiming lost traditional knowledge. In this recovery, the artists advocate for gentler, more sustainable custodianship of the land.
Lismore Regional Gallery is a creative initiative of Lismore City Council supported by the New South Wales Government through Create NSW, the Australian government through Creative Australia, its arts funding and advisory body, and the Friends of the Gallery.
Open Tues–Sat, 10am–4pm, and Thursdays 10am–6pm.
46 Magellan Street, Lismore

Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre
‘Silhouette of Memories’ presents a collection of paintings by Bundjalung artist Michael Philp that explore personal history and a strong connection to family and friends. Each painting has been inspired by a memory or an old photograph.
‘I grew up with a large extended family so the social and cultural connections run deep over many generations.
I felt strongly about each painting and the emotional connections I had with everyone who was being depicted.
I get to honour these people in some small way, some of whom are not with us anymore’, says Michael.
This exhibition is the outcome of Tweed Regional Gallery’s inaugural Bundjalung award, awarded to Michael Philp as part of the 2022 Wollumbin Art Award.
