A bushfire that may have been deliberately lit in Nightcap National Park on Sunday has yet to be extinguished.

The fire has closed access to the popular tourist attraction of Minyon Falls.

According to National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) area manager John Fisher, the fire started in suspicious circumstances on Sunday and is still burning along Minyon Falls Road.

‘The Minyon Falls area of the national park is now closed and there is no access to Minyon Falls or Minyon Grass Picnic Areas. There is also no access for bushwalking, horseriding or mountain biking in this section, Mr Fisher said on Monday.

‘Rummery Park Camping Area, within Whian Whian State Conservation Area remains open, however visitors need to access the camping area through Nightcap Range Road,’ he added.

‘Members of the public need to be aware that this is a bushfire, not a hazard reduction burn.’

‘Rural Fire Service and NPWS fire crews are working to bring the blaze, which is burning in the dry sclerophyll forest along Minyon Falls road, under control.’

Mr Fisher said that while there is no access to the Minyon Falls section of Nightcap National Park, the Terania Creek and Mount Nardi sections remain open.’

According to the Rural Fire Service website, the fire has been contained to a 150-hectare area but is still burning.

Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.
