A 73-year-old rock climber who thought he would tackle the steep cliff at Cosy Corner with his son yesterday (October 6) ran out of puff half-way up the cliff and had to be rescued.
Tweed Byron LAC acting inspector Chad Deegenaars told Echonetdaily the man had been holidaying with his son in Byron Bay and the pair decided to tackle the sharp shale cliff face of Cape Byron yesterday morning.
But, despite being an experienced rock climber, the man became exhausted and stranded partway through the climb.
‘Fortunately his son had his mobile phone with him and phoned 000,’ acting inspector Deegenaars said.
Brunswick Valley Volunteer Rescue Association, police and NSW Ambulance attended, with VRA members able to scale down the steep cliff face and help the man return to safety.
‘He was seen by paramedic and deemed to be well enough to go home with his family, which was a good result,’ acting inspector Deegenaars said.
Thank goodness we have volunteer rescuers from Brunswick Valley Volunteer Rescue Association who do this specialist rescue work. They take time off work, raise their own funds and give a lot to the community, all voluntarily. BTW, you can make tax deductible donation to them!!
Most cases, the rescued folks are too traumatised, and confused to know who it is that just saved them to remember to give a donation.
So, give one if you can.
