Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.

Anzac Day memorials 2024

From the early hours of this morning people gathered to acknowledge the sacrifice of lives, families and communities have made in the name of war and keeping peace. Across the Northern Rivers events will continue today as we acknowledge the cost of war.

Anzac Day memorials and events are being held around the country and many people have decided to couple this with a long weekend.

‘No-one ever came back but all reports indicate it’s lovely,’ and so begins this wickedly funny play about death and motherhood. Directed by the Drill’s accomplished artistic director, Liz Chance, Ghosting the Party tells the story of three generations of women who face questions of mortality and life with rigour, honesty and humour.

Reclaiming childhood in the ‘device age’

A century and a half ago, the visionary Henry David Thoreau declared people had become ‘the tool of their tools.’  In this device-driven age of smartphones, social media, and artificial intelligence, few observations could be seen as more prescient.

On Friday Lismore City Mayor Steve Krieg launched Council’s new Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) at the 2022 NAIDOC Day celebrations.

Cr Krieg said this is Council’s third RAP. ‘It is designed to support and encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and embed reconciliation throughout Council.’

The RAP will run for two years and outlines specific actions for achieving Council’s vision for reconciliation.

The focus of the 2022/24 RAP is on developing and strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, engaging staff and stakeholders towards reconciliation, and developing and piloting innovative strategies to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Mayor Krieg said the latest RAP was built on the successes and achievements of the two previous RAPs.

‘A workplace, and a society that is inclusive of all, listens to each other, and works together to achieve a common goal is my vision for Lismore,’ he said.

Commitment and direction

‘This will take time, but with the commitment and direction of our Reconciliation Action Plan, it is a goal that I believe is achievable in the foreseeable future.

‘I would like to thank all of Council’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff who stood up and helped to develop this plan. I look forward to working closely with all Council staff to make this plan a reality.’

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. While Krieg and the Councillors rep on the ROUS board have put destruction of the Widjabul Wiabul mobs cemetary and religious cultural site for a new Dunoon Dam (despite an existing well researched and Adopted Plan without a dam) back on the table. Words are cheap.

  2. Cripes! – Why did I vote for Cnr Keig’s ticket ?
He’s gone ‘woke’ already – after only 6 months in the job that he promised and we all hoped he would do.
