Composting for a Better World!

International Compost Awareness Week is here, and we asked our local organic champions Santos Organics whether there was any point in composting our organics and using compost to create a healthier soil, or whether we should just dig a huge hole somewhere in the shire and let everyone throw their stuff in. Main Arm road meeting this Thursday

It has been over two years since the 2022 floods and residents of Main Arm have been dealing with third world road conditions ever since. Now Byron Shire Council has agreed to ‘enter Middle Earth’ as one resident put it, and they have invited Main Arm residents to join them at Kohinur Hall this Thursday.

Furious flood-traumatised residents around New City Road to the west of Mullum are sending a clear message to Council around its plans to turn floodplains into residential: ‘No floodplain development’. Photo Eve Jeffery

With the two-year flood anniversary being recognised this week, Council appears to be pushing on with its plans to seek approval from the state government for floodplain development in Mullumbimby.

Distraught residents gathered at 75 New City Road, Mullum to highlight just one proposal, which they describe as complete madness. Up to a metre of water inundated homes in the area in 2022, and while the NSW government promised funding to assist with house raising, retrofits and buybacks, those promises are yet to materialise. Council’s Byron Shire Residential Strategy refresh is expected to be on the agenda of the March 14 meeting.

‘Get your placards ready’, says Dale Emerson from the Mullum Residents Association.

  1. Yes it’s absolutely negligent imo of council to continue to allow development on the floodplains.
It is as stupid as Lismore City Councillors in particular the Kreig team and Big Rob who voted against raising the minimum flood floor level to ensure it’s above the levels of inundation 2 years ago. Lismore are also suggesting filling certain areas of lismore to raise such out of flood!!! Honestly where do they think the water will go?
It’s like the fill for the new land release in Byron . Just watch the arts and industry estate flood next time !

  2. Yeah it’s everywhere greed rules as does fools water will just flood some other poor soul who has never flooded building on flood plains is like building a dam and the water has to go somewhere
