The Kyogle Environment Group (KEG) are highlighting the importance of electing competent councillors who are able to advance the objectives of the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan (CCASAP) developed by Meridian Urban in the upcoming council elections.
‘The recently commissioned report by Kyogle Council promises meaningful consultation, consistent with Council’s Participation Plan, to involve the community and key stakeholders, including the Climate Change Working Group (CCWG). This development is a positive step forward and is welcome,’ said KEG spokesperson Tori Bail.
‘In a time of ecosystem stewardship, it’s imperative to elect Councillors in the upcoming elections on September 14 who understand the importance of good governance in facing the challenges and opportunities ahead.’
The CCASAP focuses on the increasing risks and impacts of climate change on the Kyogle LGA and its community, particularly with regard to land systems, land use, the environment, economy, lifestyle, and wellbeing.
‘The role of climate change in shaping Kyogle’s future is well-recognised, and the state government expects Kyogle Council to lead in educating the local and business communities, while planning and delivering effective ecosystem management,’ said Ms Bail.
‘This goes beyond mere adaptation. The land use sectors of agriculture and forestry, are central to both contributing to and mitigating climate change. Forests, as significant carbon sinks, and the land-based mitigation measures, often termed nature-based or natural climate solutions, offer substantial benefits to both human wellbeing and biodiversity.
‘As the Kyogle Council elections approach, it’s crucial to vote for candidates who prioritise climate action and vote wisely.’
