Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.

Towered over by giant stuff the latest Circus Oz show Model Citizens sees the action unfolding within a cleverly designed model kit world which challenges perspective, scale and normality.

The performance is the first show NORPA has been able to put on at Lismore City Hall since the flood inundated the entire bottom floor of the building.

The performances played tonight and tomorrow feature the Circus Oz troupe and a cast of oversized everyday objects which become an intriguing new playground of possibilities for the all-human ensemble, offering a new life as unexpected circus equipment.

A six metre safety pin, a giant clothes peg, a massive pair of scissors you definitely couldn’t run with and an enormous pair of aerial undies are just a few of the oversized props.

What you won’t see on stage is Circus Oz’s oversized heart.

The company, who has sold out all three shows, and NORPA have donated 100 tickets to flood affected families via the Lismore Helping Hands Community Group.

‘We’re delighted to be opening our doors for the first time after the flood with a fantastic performance by Circus Oz’, says Julian Louis, NORPA’s Artistic Director.

‘We’re looking forward to welcoming our audience back as well as the many families affected by the flood who have received free tickets to the show.

‘Circus as art form is about bravery, resilience, relying on each other and fun – the very qualities that typify our community.’

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
