One man’s art is another man’s mess and in yet another example of wanton vandalism, a self-proclaimed graffiti ‘artist’ has left their misguided version of creativity on facilities at Lismore’s Riverview Park.

The Lismore City Council owned sporting facilities are substantially used by Little Athletics, but are also shared by Football Far North Coast. Committee member from Little ‘A’s, Laurie Mcleod made the annoying discovery this week of the spray can attack emblazoned across a substantial area of the storage buildings at the complex.

Mr McLeod inspected the damage with FFNC general manager Steve Mackney and both men expressed anger and exasperation about the senseless defacement that will cost the LCC ratepayers as council staff devote resources to clean the mess.

‘This form of expression has no purpose and even if I was able to look past the damage in trying to find anassessment of an artistic justification, I would score it zero out of ten’, said Mackney. ‘I have some old crayons and a colouring book at home with numbers. Maybe this villain could contact me if they want to explore the arts?’

Both Mr McLeod and Mr Mackney said that they considered the actions of this person responsible to be selfish and said that this created an impediment the efforts of grassroots sporting groups that work hard to sustain facilities and promote sound values.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Hi Steve, it would take 5 mins to get 2 colours and spray over it and you would hardly notice it was ever there.

    Thanks.

Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.
