A man has died in hospital following an E bike crash in Byron Bay earlier this month.

About 7:30pm on Saturday, 13 April, 2024, emergency services were called to Ewingsdale Road, Byron Bay, following reports of an E-bike crash.

A 30-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District attended the scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police have since been notified that the man died in hospital on Thursday (18 April, 2024).
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

  1. Finally the Echo is reporting the many crashes and near misses! Just witnessed two 10 year old girls lying in a roundabout laughing away as their electric bikes lay sprawled in the path of speeding cars. No helmets on most of these kids!

  2. So sad to hear this news, but I can’t say that it is a surprise. We really need a conversation about and some new laws for ebikes. They are great and will revolutionise the way people get around up here, but I’m seeing some really dangerous behaviours with them, almost everyday . Many people are riding without helmets in the middle of the road, sometimes with surfboards on one side and paniers on the other. I’ve seen gangs of up to 10 teenagers on ebikes hooning along Clarkes to main beach, on the beach. I’ve had people riding towards me, without lights, on the road at dusk while I’m driving towards them…they seem blissfully ignorant of how invisible they are. An accident waiting to happen

    • Possibly not. There is already a range of requirements governing these vehicles – it’s a matter of enforcement. Perhaps a combination of a lack of resources and/or will.

      • Another terrible bit of journalism leaving us guussing what really happened. The person fell of their bike on their own. No need for any enforcement, just tell you kids to ride responsible and with a helment.

  3. I don’t like whinging but it’s not a whiny when you’re regularly forced off a middle of town meter wide footpath by people on e-bikes and bikes in general, it’s out of hand. I am a disabled walker and need to keep to the flat path but are forced into the dirt by bikes every time, when I have stood my ground I get the finger mainly from young ladies and told it’s a shared footpath when it’s not . Time for a big look at all this before another soul is gone. Apparently emergency depts deal with crashed people daily. We don’t necessarily need licenses but some big stick warning and education, more bike lanes on roads and more thought.
