A new initiative that aims to create opportunities for young people is off and running with a focus on inspiring young people to think like entrepreneurs and create their own opportunities.

It is called the Byron Young Innovators project, and Byron Shire Council recently held a breakfast talk with Matt Pfahlert from the Australian Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship (ACRE) in Victoria.

‘This was a chance to hear his ideas about successful youth entrepreneurship programs and proven social enterprise models,’ said Sasha Graham, Byron Shire Council’s social innovation officer.

‘ACRE is running successful programs in northeast Victoria, an area that has similar social issues and untapped economic opportunities to Byron Shire’s.

‘It has introduced programs in schools across Victoria. As part of the program students created, developed and ran their own businesses within their school and donated the profits to a social cause they were passionate about.

‘Byron Young Innovators will include a number of projects to create an ecosystem for entrepreneurship in Byron Shire, which will be aimed at different age groups.’

The first project will be aimed at primary school students and will involve a two-day entrepreneurship program. Future events are planned for 2018. For schools and a chance to get involved call Sasha Graham on 6626 7000 or visit www.byronyounginnovators.org.au.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
