After tackling Australia, Will is ready to take on more international BMX freestlye competitors. Photo supplied

Tweed-based BMX freestyler Will Spedding has backed up a state championship with a national title and is now set to head to South Africa to compete against other elite riders.

The 17-year-old got the year off to a good start when he won the AusCycling (NSW/ACT) BMX Freestyle Amateur (15+) State Championship on Sunday, 21 January in Tuggeranong.

He then won the gold medal at the Rampfest Australian National Amateur Championships, earlier this month.

According to AusCycling: ‘In a field of 12 finalists, Spedding stood out as the rider most capable of joining the elite ranks in 2025, putting together a strong run to win the gold medal from Brodie Quick and last year’s U/15 national champion Koby Carrol.’

‘This is an amazing result for Will, having just returned from surgery on a Bennett’s fracture in January,’ Donna Spedding (mum) said.

Will has been riding BMX freestyle since he was 12 years old and has travelled to China, Europe and South Africa to compete. He is one of seven AusCycling ‘developing and emerging’ riders across Australia, which allows him to train at the National Training Centre on the Gold Coast.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
